In the mountainous and humid region of Galicia (Northwest Spain), arable farms are small and often fragmented due to the traditional inheritance processes. In light of these characteristics, mechanical weeding is proving to be a sustainable alternative to synthetic herbicides use. Recent EU policies linked to the Green Deal such as the Farm to Fork strategy are driving reductions in pesticide usage, therefore promoting mechanical tools offers farmers a solution to this challenge while addressing local landscape constraints, consumer trends and production needs. In Galicia, where maize, potatoes, and cereals dominate arable rotations, physical weed removal methods are gaining relevance.
