In the horticultural landscapes of Galicia and NW Spain, traditional small-scale farms usually suffer from erosion, weed pressure, soil acidity and input dependency. Agroforestry offers a holistic alternative by integrating trees, crops, and livestock to enhance biodiversity, restore soil health, and improve weed management without the use of chemical herbicides. Agroforestry systems build on local traditions of mixed farming while simultaneously enhancing the climate resilience and economic diversification of the farms.
