In the horticultural systems of NW Spain, characterised by an  Atlantic climate and high biomass production, weed management without the use of chemical herbicides remains a key challenge, especially on plots located in mountainous rainy areas. In this context, cover crops are gaining momentum as an agroecological tool that improves soil health while delivering an effective weed suppression. The integration of cover crops into rotations with crops traditionally grown in Galicia (such as potatoes, peppers, broccoli or turnip greens) allows farmers to better manage weeds through competition for space, light and nutrients while improving the soil structure, organic matter content, and increasing the resilience of the farming system to climate change.
