In the humid, small sized and sloped arable systems of Galicia (NW Spain), weed control and soil degradation are important and recurring challenges for farmers trying to improve soil structure and fertility. These issues are often intensified by the high rainfall and fragmented plot layouts that are a consequence of the traditional inheritance processes in the region. Cover crops represent a practical and nature-based solution to these problems, while aligning with agroecological and organic farming principles.
