Dead mulches are a layer of organic, dead plant matter spread over the soil surface. This material will suppress weed growth, conserve soil moisture, moderate soil temperature, and has the potential to increase nutrient levels over an extended time frame. Unlike living mulches, which are actively growing plants used to cover soil, dead mulches are static and decomposing. Common examples include residues from terminated cover crops, compost, straw, hay and wood chips.
