Pesticide use in Swedish arable farming is dominated by herbicides in cereals. In recent years herbicide applications have increased, resulting in the need to study opportunities for reduction, not least because weeds are becoming more and more resistant to herbicides and few new preparations are being developed. It has been shown that the optimal dose varies substantially between fields. German studies have shown that it is realistic to reduce the dose by at least 30% if the dose is adjusted according to site specific demands. If only the weedy parts of the field are sprayed during post-harvest stubble control, e.g. with glyphosate, it is likely that use can be reduced even further.
