The Cross visit started with a visit at the farm Krannestrup. About 470 hectars of mainly cereals are cultivated and most of it is consumed by the slaughter pigs on the farm. They are quite concerned about the weeds and they only apply herbicides where it is necessary. An advisor visits them regularly during the growing season and they often divide fields in management zones depending on weed pressure. Of special concern are grass weeds and if italian ryegrass is found, the plants are removed by hand, since this weed is often resistant to herbicides.
They have good experiences of practicing delayed sowing. First week of October is OK for sowing winter barley, so this gives plenty of opportunities for stale seedbeds before sowing.
We then travelled to Velas open Field trials day with emphasis on variety testing and pest management. A lot of field trials were on display and the crops were generally exceptionally good this year. Jens Erik Jensen from SEGES showed us some examples of weed management strategies.
We had a very valuable day and we thank the SEGES team led by Sophie Appel for great hosting of the AdvisoryNetPEST Cross visit and invited Thomas Börjesson, Agroväst to informed the participants about Oper8.
