A competitive culitvar is a variety that grows well in the presence of weeds by competing with them directly for resources without there being a crop yield or quality loss. A competitive cultivar acts as a cultural control tool. Choice of cultivar depends on the weed flora present on individual farms. Some cultivars suppress weed germination, helping to maintain a lower weed population, other varieties are weed tolerant, so will grow well in the presence of weeds, however this has the risk of the weed seed bank building up if weed seeds shed.
