The false seedbed technique is an agronomic practice for weed control based on the early preparation of the soil as if for sowing. The goal is to stimulate the germination of most of the non-dormant or quiescent seeds present in the top 5–6 cm of soil, so that the emerged seedlings can then be eliminated through mechanical operations or thermal methods such as flame weeding, either before or, in some cases, also after the cash crop sowing.
