Interest in alternative weed control methods is growing in arable farming due to increasing herbicide resistance, limited availability of new chemical solutions, and a push from farmers to reduce pesticide use. Electric weeding presents a novel method of managing weeds by delivering an electric current through the plant. This current converts to heat, damaging plant cells in both roots and foliage, ultimately killing or stunting the plant. This method is non-selective, meaning it affects any vegetation it touches. While shielded applicators for in-row treatments are under development, they are not yet available in Latvia or elsewhere in Europe. Future advancements—such as weed wipers, artificial intelligence, and robotics—could enable highly targeted, site-specific applications. This technique holds promise for reducing herbicide use and contributing to broader environmental benefits.
