Dead mulch in the vineyard under-rows conserves moisture, reduces erosion and weeds. It is effective if the biomass layer is thick but can be costly. Mower-windrowers use inter-row residues, lowering costs. Too little or too much biomass may reduce effectiveness or promote rot.
